Bailey the Pet Buffalo

Just like your family dog, Bailey Jr. loves to go on car rides. However, the fact that he is a six foot tall, eight foot long bison makes taking those trips a little more complicated!
Owner Jim Sautner of Alberta, Canada had to seriously modify his Pontiac Bonneville so Bailey Jr. could fit; not to mention beefing up the car to handle his 1,820lb weight! The three and a half year old steer even gets his own bucket of oats to munch on during the drive.
Being as the car isn’t exactly road legal with Bailey Jr. in the passenger’s seat, Jim has to restrict his travels to parades and private roads.

Bailey Jr. isn’t Jim’s first buffalo. After the passing of their previous bison, Bailey Sr. in 2008 the Sautners decided they missed having a bison as part of the family, and adopted young Bailey Jr. from a friend.
Far from just a farm animal, Bailey Jr. is like a shadow to Jim, who believes Bailey thinks of him as his mother. Bailey Jr. loves being chased around by Jim on his four wheeler, or just relaxing in the living room. He may very well be the world’s largest “puppy dog”!

Local Animal Shelter Breaks Adoption Record

In local animal news, one of our biggest area animal shelters, Kansas City's Wayside Waifs, had their Adopt-A-Thon this past weekend, offering half-price adoptions on Saturday and Sunday. Amazingly, the shelter set an all-time record with 316 animals adopted!

Wayside Waifs was one of many animal shelters in the Midwest that volunteered to take on lost and orphaned animals after the tornadoes that affected our area in May. With over 300 pets on their way to happy homes after this weekend, this no doubt gives them a lot of extra space!

Today is Love Your Pet Day!

Feb. 20 is Love Your Pet Day, so today’s animal fact is pet-related. Did you know that there are 65 million dogs in the United States and 77 million cats? And roughly 75 percent of households own a pet — mine being one of them. So, if you’re a pet fan too, make sure to go home today and pamper that special animal by showing it some love. Here are some ways to do that:

- Play with your animal outside.
- Give it a bath.
- Buy it its favorite toy.
- Get it a special treat.
- Pet it or scratch its back.
- Just spend some extra time with it.

People get very busy with their lives and sometimes forget about the important things in life, one being their pets. While they should be thoughtful of their pets every day, sometimes people need a little reminder of why they love their animals’ cute cuddly faces so much. My puppy is almost too spoiled, but I plan on taking her on a long walk when I get home from work. What will you do for your pet? Please comment below.
