What's A Warthog "Sounder"?

Warthogs live in groups called sounders.

 Picture from Digital Journal

Younger male warthogs live in bachelor groups, but leave on their own when they become adult.  They will only join a new sounder with a sexually receptive female warthog.  While females tend to stay in their natal groups, the males will leave to wander, but remain within their home range, or area.  The females live in their sounders with their young and other female warthogs.

Fast Warthogs

Warthogs are from the same family as domestic pigs, although their heads are covered with warts that serve as protective pumps. They have very little hair, except for a thick mane on their back. Although warthogs look mean, they are actually just grazers, feeding on grasses and plants. However, when warthogs are threatened, they can run up to 30 miles per hour.

African Lens-Pig

It’s their tusks that makes warthogs, also known as African Lens-Pigs, so recognizable. They use their tusks for digging, defense against predators and when males fight each other.

Warthogs are fast runners. And they’re bigger than they look, ranging in size from 110 to 330 pounds.

Derek Nutley took this picture. I'm hoping he used a telephoto lens!
