Loads of Lemurs in Madagascar

Biologists believe Madagascar is home to more than 50 different kinds of lemurs.

Madagascar’s lemurs range from the itty bitty pygmy mouse lemur, which weighs less than an ounce, to the cat-sized Sifaka, which can weigh up to15 pounds. Smaller species are mostly active at night, while bigger species feed and romp during the day.

They don't look like it but aye-ayes are primates, relatives to chimpanzees, apes and yes, humans. They have opposable big toes that help them dangle from branches. The aye-aye is also distinguished by its big eyes and bushy tail, which is longer than its body.

The Smallest Reptiles Ever?

Scientists have recently discovered four new chameleon species around Madagascar that may prove to be some of the smallest reptiles in the world.

At only about one inch long, these chameleons may represent a severe case of island dwarfism, a condition in which a species grows smaller over time to adapt to conditions. It’s no surprise that these reptiles were just now discovered; they wouldn’t exactly be easy to spot in the wild!
