Arctic Fox (Alopex Lagopus) In a lineup of North American foxes, this one would be singled out because of visible adaptations to an Arctic climate. As winter begins, the arctic fox sheds its brown coat for a thick white one. Also known as the White Fox, Polar Fox or Snow Fox, its compact body, short legs, muzzle, and small rounded ears-forms that conserve body heat-distinguish this polar species. Probably the widest ranging terrestrial hunters they will travel more than 1,000 miles to find food.
